North Island Employment Foundations Society is marking its 40th anniversary by inviting the community to share stories about how the organization has made a difference in their lives.

NIEFS first opened its doors in 1986 as a youth employment initiative and has since grown into a regional provider of employment services, skills training, employer support, newcomer services, and community partnerships across North Vancouver Island.

Executive Director Shannon Baikie says the anniversary is about more than celebrating the organization's history.

She says it's also about recognizing the people who found new career opportunities, employers who built their teams, community partners who worked together, and the communities that have grown alongside NIEFS over the past four decades.

The organization says it has helped thousands of people find work while supporting employers and collaborating with Indigenous communities, governments, schools, businesses, and community organizations to strengthen the region's workforce.

As part of the celebration, anyone who has connected with NIEFS is invited to share their story by leaving a handwritten memory at the Campbell River or Port Hardy offices, or by email.

You can share how their job services, training, or career support have impacted your life by submitting your story directly to the NIEFS Contact Page or by messaging the North Island Employment Facebook Page.

Keeping Our Word

The word "éy7á7juuthem" means “Language of our People” and is the ancestral tongue of the Homalco, Tla’amin, Klahoose and K’ómoks First Nations, with dialectic differences in each community.

It is pronounced "eye-ya-jooth-hem."
