British Columbians are being encouraged to support farmers and food producers affected by wildfires in Summerland and the Okanagan by buying local products.
Agriculture and Food Minister Lana Popham says many farms, orchards and food producers have been dealing with evacuations, road closures, smoke and disrupted operations during one of the most important times of the year.
Popham says people don’t have to travel to affected communities to show their support.
She’s encouraging shoppers across B.C. to look for locally grown fruit, produce and other food products, and to choose Summerland and Okanagan wines, ciders, beer and spirits when dining out or shopping.
The Buy BC label can also help consumers identify products that are grown, raised or processed in the province.
Popham says every local purchase helps keep British Columbians working, supports farmers and producers and strengthens local communities.
Penticton-Summerland MLA Amelia Boultbee is also encouraging people to think Penticton-Summerland when buying gifts, wine or cider.
Boultbee says many local retailers have online shops and could use the support as the community continues to recover from the wildfires.
She also thanked wildfire crews, first responders, volunteers and others supporting the community during the ongoing recovery.
