A popular aviation event is returning to Comox this weekend.

Open Cockpit Day takes place Saturday at the 19 Wing Heritage Air Park, giving the public a chance to step aboard and explore several historic Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft that are normally closed to visitors.

The event is hosted by the Comox Air Force Museum and is one of the museum’s premier public events, attracting aviation enthusiasts and families from across Vancouver Island and beyond.

Throughout the day, museum volunteers, serving Canadian Armed Forces members and veterans will be on hand to share the history and operational significance of the aircraft, as well as some of the unique stories behind them.

Visitors can also check out the Air Park’s newest attraction, the Vampire Pavilion, which is home to the museum’s de Havilland Vampire aircraft.

Open Cockpit Day runs Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the 19 Wing Heritage Air Park on Military Row, across from Glacier Gardens Arena in Comox.

Admission is by donation, with proceeds going toward the Comox Air Force Museum’s heritage preservation and educational programs.
