A lithium battery is to blame for a weekend fire in Cumberland.

Thursday, August 20, 2026 at 7:41 AM

On Sunday night, Cumberland Fire Rescue was dispatched to a fire at Dodge City Cycles on Dunsmuir Avenue.

Due to the size and complexity of the incident, help was requested from Courtenay to provide additional personnel. The fire started on the first floor and spread to the small roof. Full access and control of the fire took some time.

An estimated 24 firefighters attended on scene to control and manage the fire while maintaining adequate personnel for fire attack, exposure protection, support operations, and firefighter safety. One Cumberland firefighter member sustained minor injuries during the fire and was transported to the hospital as a precaution to ensure their safety and wellbeing. The firefighter has since returned home and is doing well and is expected to be back in service shortly.

The investigation has been completed and the cause of the fire has been identified as a lithium battery.

It’s a reminder to avoid leaving electric batteries charging overnight while unattended. Being present while charging can help detect any issues early and may help prevent a fire.
