The repaving work planned for 5th Street hill in Courtenay is finally getting underway.

Work was to begin late last month, but the weather forced the City to reschedule.

The City of Courtenay will be repaving the eastbound and westbound lanes of the 5th Street hill approach to the bridge as well as the intersection at 5th Street and Cliffe Avenue.

Construction will take place overnight - from 7pm to 6am - to keep the disruption to traffic at a minimum.

The 5th Street bridge, 5th Street from the bridge to Cliffe Avenue, and the intersection at 5th Street and Cliffe Avenue will be closed to traffic.

Available detours will be Comox Road, Ryan Road, as well as the 17th Street Bridge or Condensory Bridge.

Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to use the sidewalks, however rerouting through the Native Sons/Florence Filberg Centre parking lot is encouraged.

The project is part of the City’s Pedestrian, Cycling, and Pavement Renewal capital program.

The 5th Street hill is one of the most heavily travelled routes in Courtenay; the project will improve the strength of the driving surface by adding special fibres containing enhanced structural properties and strength to the new asphalt, which is intended to address the rutting from the aging asphalt.

The City of Courtenay thanks residents for your patience and cooperation.
