People in Campbell River are being invited to roll up their sleeves and help restore the local estuary.
Greenways Land Trust is hosting an eelgrass transplanting this morning at 10 a.m. at Tyee Spit.
Dive crews will be harvesting eelgrass shoots from donor sites, while volunteers on shore will help prepare the plants for transplanting into new trial areas.
Organizers say the project has already restored about 7,000 square metres of eelgrass meadows in the Mill Pond area near Baikie Island over the past couple of years.
The effort is now entering its final phase, with plans to shift toward long-term monitoring and explore additional restoration opportunities elsewhere in the estuary.
Eelgrass plays a key role in the coastal ecosystem, providing habitat and feeding grounds for juvenile salmon, improving water quality, stabilizing shorelines, and helping reduce erosion.
Anyone planning to attend is encouraged to dress for the weather and bring water and a snack.
