Community members are being invited to roll up their sleeves and help restore part of the Willow Creek watershed in Campbell River later this month.

The Homalco First Nation, in partnership with the Strathcona Regional District, Greenways Land Trust and the Nature Trust of BC, is organizing a volunteer planting event on Tuesday, October 27th, from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Volunteers will help plant native species along Willow Creek, contributing to ongoing efforts to improve the health of the watershed and support local wildlife.

The planting area is located a short walk from Martin Road, below the bridge near the wooden fences.

Working Together to Protect Willow Creek

The planting event is part of a larger restoration initiative led by the Homalco First Nation, known as yiyχmɛštəm qʷaqʷtəm, which translates to “We Will Take Care of the Creek.”

The project focuses on restoring streams and wetlands within the Willow Creek watershed, an area shared by the Homalco First Nation and neighbouring communities.

“As stewards of our lands, χʷɛmaɬkʷu has prioritized stream and wetland restoration on our lands at Campbell River,” said Homalco Chief Darren Blaney.

He says the project reflects the Nation's commitment to caring for the lands and waters of the watershed.

Strathcona Regional District Chair, Mark Baker, says collaboration between the participating organizations and local volunteers can make a lasting difference.

“By working together, we hope to help transform this small area into a healthier ecosystem that will benefit future generations,” Baker said.

He added that planting native species provides important environmental benefits, including supporting soil health, local pollinators and wildlife.

Community Support and Volunteer Opportunities

The purchase of plants and supplies for the restoration project is being supported through BC Hydro's Community ReGreening grant program.

Shovels and gardening gloves will be available at the planting site, although volunteers are encouraged to bring their own equipment if possible.

Residents interested in participating or learning more about the project can contact Camille Andrews, Habitat Management Coordinator with Greenways Land Trust, by emailing camille@greenwaystrust.ca, or calling 250-287-3785.

Additional information about the restoration initiative is available at Homalco First Nation's Land and Fresh Water Stewardship.

The October 27th planting event offers residents an opportunity to contribute directly to the restoration of a local watershed while helping create a healthier environment for future generations.

Keeping Our Word

The word "éy7á7juuthem" means “Language of our People” and is the ancestral tongue of the Homalco, Tla’amin, Klahoose and K’ómoks First Nations, with dialectic differences in each community.

It is pronounced "eye-ya-jooth-hem."
