The Village of Cumberland is kicking off construction on the community’s largest infrastructure project ever.
The upgrades to the Wastewater Treatment Facility will focus on improvements to the current lagoon system and wastewater screening, adding nutrients for phosphorus removal and additional environmentally friendly disinfection measures.
It will also include an operator’s building, workshop, improved instrumentation, and site security.
Once complete, the upgrades will meet and exceed provincial and federal regulatory treatment requirements, releasing safe water into Cumberland’s inland habitat areas.
Construction will take about a year to complete.
The Wastewater Upgrades Project comes from a joint $7.1 million investment from the Governments of BC and Canada, with additional funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
In April, an additional $2.5 million was awarded via the Government of Canada’s Canada Community-Building Fund to support Phase 2 of the wastewater upgrades.
