A recent audit of Comox's curbside recycling program shows residents are making good use of the service, but there's still room for improvement when it comes to sorting materials.
The Town of Comox says a Recycle BC audit found that almost 17 percent of the material collected in curbside recycling carts was incompatible with the program.
According to the audit, just over 12 percent of the material was made up of items not accepted in the Recycle BC system, while nearly 2 percent belonged in a different recycling stream, and about 3 percent consisted of unsortable or contaminated material.
Some of the most common problem items found in recycling bins included plastic household products and toys, clothing and other textiles, scrap metal, hardcover and softcover books, and recyclables placed inside plastic bags.
The Town says every correctly sorted item helps reduce contamination and improve the efficiency of the recycling system, keeping more material out of the landfill.
