It was a big weekend - and a wintery one - on the Coldest Night of the Year.

The Campbell River & North Island Transition Society raised more than $51,000 to go towards their new build, Eagle Harbour, providing services and support for women and children fleeing violent domestic situations in our community.

About 200 walkers helped raise 102% of their goal - with more cash to count collected on Saturday.

Diane Palmer, Executive Director with the Campbell River & North Island Transition Society says the weather was challenging but gave a realistic representation of the weather that people endure while being unsheltered.

In the Comox Valley, walkers were raising funds for the completion of Dairy’s Place, a new 40-unit apartment building that will open in April to house women and children who are fleeing violence.

Heather Ney, Executive Director with the Comox Valley Transition Society says for the 8th year, Valley residents have contributed generously - almost $175,000 - the 8th most in total dollars in the country out of 182 Canadian communities.

Ney says they expect that number will get closer to their $200,000 goal. Donations can be made until March 31st at CNOY.org.
