The Strathcona Regional District is recognizing National AccessAbility Week, running from May 31st to June 6th.
The week celebrates the contributions of people with disabilities while raising awareness about accessibility and inclusion in communities across Canada.
The SRD says accessibility means creating spaces, programs, and services where everyone can fully participate in community life.
The district’s Accessibility and Inclusion Advisory Committee was established in 2023 and includes people with disabilities, advocates, support workers, and community members from around the region.
The committee works with several local governments and organizations, School District 84, and the Vancouver Island Regional Library to identify barriers and improve accessibility.
As part of National AccessAbility Week, the SRD is encouraging residents to use its online accessibility feedback tool to report barriers they have experienced or witnessed while accessing public services, facilities, or programs.
The district is also highlighting several accessibility projects underway, including a series of short films focused on lived experiences in the community and new accessible playground equipment planned for Mitlenatch Park in Electoral Area D.
