Special Weather Statement For East Vancouver Island - Courtenay To Campbell River

Monday, January 29, 2024 at 7:26 AM

By Jay Herrington

Environment Canada has extended its special weather statement on the rain.

A series of storms bringing warm temperatures, elevated freezing levels and periods of heavy rain will increase the potential for flooding, pooling water, and possible landslides throughout Vancouver Island.

The very warm air mass has resulted in temps 5 to 10 degrees Celsius above seasonal.

Environment Canada says freezing levels will continue to hover between the 2000 and 2700 metre mark and will remain at those levels through until the end of week.

The combination of elevated freezing levels and heavy rain will result in snow melting which will be in addition to the already heavy rainfall.

The heaviest rainfall is expected to continue through the day today and ease off by Tuesday morning. The next wave of precipitation is expected by Wednesday morning.
