A search for unmarked graves has begun in Tseshaht First Nation.

A search for unmarked graves has begun in Tseshaht First Nation.

The Tseshaht First Nation says the project at the former site of the Alberni Indian Residential School began Monday and will take about two weeks.

Children from more than 100 First Nations from across the province attended the school from 1900 to 1973.

The scans are expected to last a couple of weeks, with a final report to come after analysis.

Similar investigations are being completed at former residential schools across Canada, following the discovery of what were believed to be more than 200 unmarked graves at a former residential school in Kamloops, B.C.

Keeping Our Word

The word "éy7á7juuthem" means “Language of our People” and is the ancestral tongue of the Homalco, Tla’amin, Klahoose and K’ómoks First Nations, with dialectic differences in each community.

It is pronounced "eye-ya-jooth-hem."
