The Strathcona Regional District is celebrating the completion of a major trail rehabilitation project in the Sayward Valley.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held last week at Memekay Horse Camp to mark improvements to the Salmon Brewster Trail Corridor.
The project rehabilitated about 40 kilometres of multi-use backcountry trail used by hikers, cyclists, runners, and horseback riders.
Work included trail stabilization, drainage improvements, bridge upgrades, new signage, and other safety and accessibility improvements.
The project received funding through the Province's Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program and is aimed at supporting outdoor recreation, tourism, and economic diversification in the region.
The Strathcona Regional District says the project also relied on thousands of volunteer hours from the North Vancouver Island chapter of the Back Country Horsemen Society of B.C., which has helped maintain the trail system for more than a decade.
