The recreational fire ban has been lifted for the City of Campbell River.

The recreational fire ban has been lifted for the City of Campbell River.

The ban was lifted yesterday at noon, after having been in place the last half of summer.

Residents can once again have recreational fires, as long as those fires meet certain bylaw regulations.

As a reminder, some of rules include that recreational fires must be in a permanent outdoor fireplace, barbeque, or fire pit not larger than 60 centimetres (24 inches) in diameter and designed to confine the fire.

As well, beach fires should be below the high-tide line as fires are not allowed on public land, or private property other than your own.

The BC Wildfire Service says that although the fire danger has declined due to recent rainfall and cooler, more seasonal temperatures, the public is strongly encouraged to continue exercising extreme caution with any recreational fire.

Category 2 and Category 3 open fires, burning barrels and cages, fireworks, fire crackers, sky lanterns and binary exploding targets continue to be prohibited until further notice.

A new wildfire has sparked southwest of Campbell River.

The cause is still listed as unknown, and the fire is burning less than a quarter-hectare near, Quinsam Lake.

The Coastal Wildfire Centre was assessing the situation - there's no word on what cause the fire.

It is pronounced "eye-ya-jooth-hem."
