If you had a Smile Cookie from a Campbell River Tim Hortons last week, you helped break a record.
In Campbell River $19,603.65 was raised through the annual Smile Cookie campaign, blowing last year’s total out of the water, according to local owner Danielle Purcelle.
That was part of a record-breaking $22.6 million raised for over 600 charities and community groups in Canada and the U.S.
Danielle and Darcy Purcell, along with other local owners Jaice and Rachelle Granson, say the funds raised in Campbell River are staying local, to benefit the Campbell River Knights of Columbus Community Hamper Fund.
Since the first-ever Smile Cookie campaign in 1996, the annual charitable campaign has raised a total of more than $151 million for charities and community groups, which are selected every year by restaurant owners.
Recipients include local hospitals, community care organizations, food banks and schools.
