Getting around the Comox Valley could soon become more affordable for low-income residents, with the Regional District launching two new transit assistance programs.

The new Emergency Transit Assistance Program will provide up to five-thousand free single-ride transit tokens each year, working with United Way BC and participating community organizations.

The tokens are intended for people who urgently need transportation for essential trips, including medical appointments, work and education.

The CVRD is also introducing its new GO Program, which will offer qualified low-income residents a 50-percent discount on 30-day transit passes.

Up to 150 people will be able to take advantage of the discounted passes during an initial six-month pilot.

Both programs are aimed at residents who may not qualify for existing provincial transit assistance, with the Regional District monitoring their impact and the potential for future expansion.
