Comox Valley RCMP is warning the public after multiple incidents involving metal spikes have been reported in the Courtenay area.
Most recently, on Sunday, a rider reported discovering several caltrops along trails near Powerhouse Road after one punctured the tire of his dirt bike.
Police have also received reports of spikes being found in a residential driveway and on public roadways in Courtenay.
On May 20, a motorist suffered two flat tires after driving through the Laketrail Road / Marsden Road area where spikes were discovered lodged in the vehicle’s tires.
RCMP say while damaged tires are inconvenient and costly, the greater concern is the risk these devices pose to public safety.
Caltrops can puncture the tires of bicycles, motorcycles, vehicles, mobility scooters, and emergency vehicles.
They also present a significant danger to pedestrians, children, pets, and wildlife, potentially causing serious injury if stepped on.
Constable Monika Terragni says regardless of who may be using a trail, roadway, or public space, intentionally placing hazardous objects where they may injure people or animals creates an unacceptable risk to the community. She also notes - it’s against the law.
The Comox Valley RCMP is asking anyone with information regarding these incidents, or additional unreported incidents, to contact the Comox Valley RCMP at (250) 338-1321.
If you wish to remain anonymous, contact Comox Valley Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
