Crews will be out today on the Puntledge River trying to remove a root ball attached to a fallen tree, lodged downstream from the Condensory Bridge.
It’s on the right side of the river when facing downstream and the roots stick out into the river and are catching other large tree limbs floating downstream.
With warming weather and increased river activity, the tree and its roots pose a significant risk to recreational users.
The City of Courtenay, in collaboration with a local environmental consultant, plans to safely remove the tree and root ball today.
The timing of this work is influenced by weather conditions, natural river flows, environmental sensitivity and BC Hydro water releases.
The City says you can expect trail closures in Condensory Park and people are being asked to obey all signage along the trail.
River users are being reminded that new hazards can appear in areas that have been benign for years.
The City says you should always wear a PFD, use caution and remain vigilant when out on any river system.
