The provincial and federal governments are supporting plans for a new secondary school in Tumbler Ridge after February’s mass shooting.
The decision follows consultations with victims’ families, students, teachers, experts and community members, with the Peace River South School Board requesting a new school be built at a different location.
Both levels of government say they will support the demolition of the current school, and construction of the new facility.
Officials say the design and location of the new school will be shaped through trauma-informed community consultations.
In the meantime, students will begin moving into a new modular campus later this month.
The shooting claimed the lives of eight people, including five students and an education assistant.
