The B.C. government has introduced legislation that would allow people to renew or replace their driver’s licence online.
Proposed amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act would enable ICBC to offer online renewals and replacements for driver’s licences, BC Identification cards, and photo BC Service Cards through its website and digital portal.
If passed, eligible drivers with full B.C. licences - classes 1 through 8 - would be able to renew their licence when no changes are required beyond extending the expiry date.
They would also be able to replace a valid licence that has been lost, damaged or destroyed.
ICBC would also be able to offer online renewal and replacement of stand-alone BCID cards, stand-alone photo BC Service Cards, and the combined Driver’s Licence and BC Services Card.
The Province says the changes are designed to save drivers time and reduce lineups at ICBC offices, freeing up staff to handle other in-person appointments, including road tests.
The Province says the move brings B.C. in line with eight other provinces that already offer some form of online driver’s licence renewal and is part of ICBC’s broader 10-year modernization plan to expand digital services.
