Construction of the upgraded Comox Fire Station is moving into its next phase.
The Town of Comox says demolition of the office portion of the building is now complete, and work is shifting to vertical construction on the new 11 thousand-square-foot addition.
The upgraded station will be built to post-disaster standards, allowing it to serve as the Town's Emergency Operations Centre during emergencies.
It will also include improved firefighter decontamination facilities, expanded training and office space, accessible features, and five affordable on-site lodging units to help improve overnight response times.
The town says about 95-percent of the materials removed during demolition were recycled, with very little ending up in the landfill.
The project is now expected to cost about $5.9 million, down from an earlier estimate of $6.1 million.
Costs will be shared between the Town of Comox and the Comox Fire Protection District.
Construction is expected to continue through 2026 and 2027, with the upgraded fire station scheduled to open in the fall of 2027.
