New drivers in British Columbia have a new option for earning their Learner's licence.
The provincial government and ICBC have launched an online version of the knowledge test for passenger vehicle and motorcycle licences, allowing people to complete the exam from home instead of visiting a driver licensing office.
“By offering this test online, we’re giving new drivers more choice and convenience, especially people in rural and remote communities who used to have to commute far distances to take the test,” said Niki Sharma, Attorney General.
“This is part of our work to modernize ICBC services so they’re more convenient, accessible and work better for everyone in British Columbia.”
The online test covers the same material as the in-office version, with the same passing grade.
Test takers will need a computer with a webcam and internet connection, as security features are used to verify identity and monitor the exam.
Drivers who pass will still need to visit an ICBC licensing office for a vision test, photo, and identity check before receiving their Learner's licence.
The online option is available for Class 5 through 8 licences, but commercial licence applicants will continue to write their knowledge tests in person.
ICBC says more than 337-thousand knowledge tests are conducted across the province each year, and moving some of them online should help free up staff and appointment times for services like road tests.
