BC Highway Patrol says nearly one thousand drivers were ticketed in April for failing to obey the province’s Slow Down and Move Over law.
A total of 999 drivers received $173 fines during the first province-wide enforcement campaign focused on protecting emergency responders and roadside workers.
The law requires drivers to slow down and move into the farthest safe lane away from stopped vehicles displaying flashing red, blue, or amber lights.
That means slowing to 70 kilometres an hour or less when the speed limit is 80 kilometres an hour or higher, and 40 kilometres an hour or less when the speed limit is below 80.
The highest number of tickets was issued in Central BC, with 619 violations, while Vancouver Island recorded 39.
While the 2026 campaign is now over, BC RCMP and the BC Highway Patrol encourages all drivers to be mindful of the summer construction season, and to obey the Slow Down and Move Over law for everyone working on our highways.
