The Comox Valley is getting ready to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day with a full afternoon and evening of culture, music, food, and community.
K'ómoks First Nation, along with a number of community and cultural partners, is hosting a free celebration on Saturday, June 20, at the Comox Valley Exhibition Grounds.
The event runs from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The festivities will open with the K'ómoks Cultural Group and feature performances throughout the day by Tsimka and Michael Red, Little Jiggers, The Spiritual Warriors, LOV, the Kumugwe Cultural Society, and four-time Juno Award winner Aysanabee.
Organizers say the event is an opportunity to celebrate the unique cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples both locally and across Canada.
In addition to live entertainment, the celebration will include youth and elder activity zones, K'ómoks cultural and archaeology displays, guided walks to the Tsolum River, storytelling and knowledge-sharing opportunities, live screen printing, more than 30 Indigenous craft vendors, and a variety of food options, including a traditional salmon barbecue.
The celebration is being supported by a number of local Indigenous organizations and local governments, including the City of Courtenay, Town of Comox, Village of Cumberland, and the Comox Valley Regional District.
Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
