The man accused of killing a Nanaimo teenager more than five years ago will plead guilty to the charge.

During an appearance in B.C. Supreme Court in Nanaimo on Monday, Gil Labine said his client will change a current not guilty plea, to guilty, at his next appearance on Aug. 15.

Steven Michael Bacon is accused of killing Makayla Chang in early 2017.

His lawyer says his client will plead guilty to first-degree murder at a court appearance next month.

Sentencing is likely to occur in December and carries an automatic life sentence with no parole for 25 years.

Bacon was charged with Chang's death in September of 2020.

He was arrested on an unrelated charge in New Brunswick in January of that year.
