With Halloween approaching, residents across the Comox Valley and Campbell River are being reminded to check local fireworks regulations before planning their celebrations.

Both the Comox Valley Regional District and the City of Campbell River require permits for the use of fireworks, although the rules surrounding permits, sales and application deadlines differ between the two areas.

Comox Valley Regional District

The Comox Valley RD is reminding residents that fireworks permits are mandatory in its rural Electoral Areas A, B and C.

Permits cost $10, and applicants must be at least 18 years old.

Fireworks can only be discharged on property owned by the permit holder or where written permission has been obtained from the property owner.

The regional district says the permit system helps local fire departments monitor fireworks activity and encourages safe practices during Halloween celebrations.

Residents are also encouraged to consider their neighbours and pets, and to provide advance notice if they plan to set off fireworks.

Anyone caught discharging fireworks without a permit could face a $500 fine.

Fireworks sales are permitted in the regional district's rural electoral areas from October 24th through November 1st, provided retailers meet the applicable requirements.

Permits are available online or through the regional district office in Courtenay.

More information, including permit applications, can be found at Comox Valley RD.

Campbell River

The City of Campbell River also requires residents to obtain a permit before setting off fireworks, but has additional restrictions.

Fireworks permits cost $20, and applications must be submitted at least two weeks before the planned fireworks display.

For residents planning to use fireworks on Halloween, October 31st, the application deadline is Saturday, October 17th.

Unlike the Comox Valley RD's rural electoral areas, the sale of fireworks is prohibited within Campbell River city limits.

However, residents can still apply for a permit to legally discharge fireworks, provided they follow the city's regulations and permit conditions.

Check Local Regulations Before Celebrating

Residents should be aware that fireworks regulations are not identical throughout the region.

The Comox Valley RD's rules apply to rural Electoral Areas A, B and C, while Courtenay, Comox and Cumberland have their own municipal regulations.

Anyone planning a Halloween fireworks display is encouraged to confirm the rules for their location, obtain the necessary permits and take precautions to protect people, pets and neighbouring properties.

Residents should also be mindful of fire safety and any restrictions that may be in effect at the time of their planned display.
