The Campbell River Board of Education and School District, along with others in the educational system, have issued a statement to express their commitment to inclusion and sexual orientation and gender identity rights within schools and offices.
In a letter from the Board, the Campbell River Principals’, and Vice-Principals’ Association, Campbell River District Teachers’ Association and CUPE Local 723, the group says it is affirming support of 2SLGBTQIA+ students, staff, families, and community members.
The letter states they “firmly believe that embracing and respecting diversity and ensuring a non-sexist environment is fundamental to creating safe, welcoming, and inclusive educational spaces.”
Sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) inclusive resources, the letter continues, are essential tools to ensure that all students and their families are represented in educational materials, and to protect students and staff from discrimination, in compliance with the BC Human Rights Code.
By integrating SOGI materials as part of the learning in schools, the goal locally is to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become socially responsible citizens who challenge discrimination and promote equity.
The letter ends with, “By cultivating an environment that values and respects the rights of all, we can create a more inclusive society for present and future generations.”
