It’s National Indigenous Peoples Day

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Chief of the Homalco First Nation Darren Blaney says it’s a very important day for First Nations.

“I think the celebration of National Aboriginal Day is the long journey of our people being acknowledged. Now people understand what happened in residential schools, but also the court cases that have come about in favor of our rights. So I think now the public is starting to get a better understanding of the contribution to society.”

Many Indigenous peoples and communities have been celebrating their culture and heritage on the summer solstice for generations. This is a good reminder that these lands have supported Indigenous communities for thousands of years.

In the Comox Valley, local governments have embraced the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People and have formally recognized their commitments to reconciliation through the adoption of their own statements, policies and/or frameworks.

The K’ómoks First Nation has invited the community to celebrate on the K’ómoks Territory on Comox Road from 4 pm to 8 pm.  You can find more information on the K’ómoks First Nation Facebook page.

Keeping Our Word

The word "éy7á7juuthem" means “Language of our People” and is the ancestral tongue of the Homalco, Tla’amin, Klahoose and K’ómoks First Nations, with dialectic differences in each community.

It is pronounced "eye-ya-jooth-hem."
