Island Health Issues Advisory Over Increase In Overdoses In Nanaimo & Campbell River

Thursday, November 3, 2022 at 8:16 AM

By Jay Herrington

Island Health has issued a Drug Poisoning/Overdose Advisory for Campbell River and Nanaimo.

The warning was issued last night.

Island Health says the drug supply is highly toxic. While all drugs can be fatal when too much is taken or combined with other substances, the risk of overdose is especially high right now with any method of drug use, including smoking, inhaling, or injecting.

If you suspect someone of overdosing, call 911 immediately and, if available to you, administer Naloxone.

Island Health also reminds residents of The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act.

The act protects those who witness an overdose and calls 911.

No one is to be charged with personal possession of an illegal substance nor charged for breach of probation or parole relating to simple drug possession.

Last year, 26 people died in Campbell River due to overdose - making 2021 the deadliest year since 2016.
