Fire investigators are still trying to pinpoint the cause of a fatal blaze at a home in Comox that took the lives of two people.

But it’s possible smoking or portable heaters played a part.

911 calls started coming in around 415pm last Friday afternoon and crews were on the scene within minutes.

According to Deputy Chief Rick Shelton of Comox Fire Rescue, one person was found just outside the structure and the second was inside.

Unfortunately, both were found deceased.

“When I arrived, I found a residential one-story structure fully engulfed in flame on the Charlie side, which is the back side of the house, heavily involved in smoke and fire,” Shelton says.

Shelton says family members were on scene and told firefighters that possibly two people were inside the home.

The building was completely engulfed in flames by the time the Comox Fire Department arrived, just minutes later.

Crews had the brunt of the fire knocked down within 15 minutes and the department confirms that two people, male and female, were found deceased inside the home.

Fire Chief Gord Schreiner, who knew the couple, says smoke alarms in the house were working, but were not connected to the sunroom.

The investigation continues.
