The Independent Investigations Office of BC has completed its investigation into an arrest that occurred in Courtenay in January last year.
Police were called to a report of a possibly impaired driver around 11 p.m. on January 5th, 2025, in the 2300 block of Mansfield Drive.
Officers later located a Cadillac Escalade matching the description in a hotel parking lot on Cliffe Avenue.
A man was found inside the vehicle and taken into custody. During the arrest, the man suffered an injury and was transported to hospital for treatment.
The IIO was notified in May and launched an investigation.
After a review of evidence, including medical records, police reports, and witness accounts, the chief civilian director determined the injuries did not meet the definition of serious harm under the Police Act.
Because a concurrent police investigation remains ongoing, the IIO is not releasing further details about the interaction.
The IIO is the independent civilian agency responsible for overseeing police-related incidents involving serious harm or death in British Columbia.
