BC Hydro has issued a public safety advisory to stay away from all reaches of the Puntledge River through April 1st.
Beginning last night, crews began increasing the spill from the Comox Dam from about 15 cubic metres per second (m3/s) to about 60 m3/s.
Depending on actual inflows, spill may be further increased to 80m3/s over the weekend.
The increased flows will provide a recreational opportunity for expert kayakers, but the wider public is advised to stay away from the river flow.
Cumulative precipitation for the month of March is trending 135% of normal and inflows into the reservoir have been 100% of normal.
The Comox Lake Reservoir water level has increased 120 centimetres since March 12th and as of yesterday was at 134.3 metres above sea level.
Inflows are expected to remain above normal for the next 7-10 days.
The increased water release from the Comox Dam helps manage the reservoir level to maintain operational flexibility to absorb future storms.
The Puntledge River Powerhouse has been offline for scheduled maintenance since March 10th and is expected to be back in service on April 1st.
Safety signage along the river is in place highlighting the risk.
