Extra funding is coming for search and rescue operations in our area.

“Whether as a local or a tourist, the North Island is a beautiful destination. People come to visit and explore our forests and trails from all over the world,” says Michele Babchuk, MLA for North Island.

“I’m glad our government is providing funding to the Campbell River Search and Rescue, so they can continue their critical work helping people who are lost or in distress.”

Campbell River Search and Rescue and Comox Valley Search and Rescue are both getting a boost to their coffers.

They will receive a share of $6 million from the province through funding to the BC Search and Rescue Association (BCSARA) with the average distribution amount being approximately $63,000 per group.

The annual  funding will help ensure that Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) groups and their volunteers are there when people need help in the backcountry.

The funding will support life-saving rescue equipment, essential training, protective equipment for volunteers and administration costs, such as insurance.

This is the second year of this annual funding agreement between the province and the rescue association, which is the only agreement of its kind in Canada.
