The Province says the FIFA World Cup is already delivering economic and community benefits across British Columbia as the tournament passes the halfway point.

Five matches at BC Place have all sold out, with more than 52 thousand fans attending each game.

“Seeing everyone in Vancouver and British Columbia come together to cheer for Canada has been nothing short of inspiring,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Tourism, Arts Culture and Sport.

“We are showing the world that British Columbia is a welcoming place where multiculturalism thrives and everyone is welcome, no matter what colour jersey you wear. We are incredibly proud of the accomplishments of the Canada Men’s National Team and look forward to hosting two more matches in Vancouver.”

Canada's 6-0 victory over Qatar drew a record 11.7-million viewers nationwide, making it the most-watched FIFA World Cup group-stage match ever in Canada.

More than 330 thousand people have also attended the Fan Festival in Vancouver since the tournament began, while watch parties have been held in communities across B.C.

The Province says restaurants, bars, retailers, and other businesses are reporting strong sales, particularly on match days.

Some hospitality businesses say sales have increased by as much as 40-percent, while some retailers have reported higher big-screen television and Canada jersey sales.

The Province says it's also investing in legacy projects tied to the tournament, including new mini soccer pitches, community events, and 500 free match tickets for children and youth facing barriers.

Two World Cup matches remain to be played in Vancouver, on July 2 and July 7. Canada will play Morocco on Saturday.

The Province says over the next five years, British Columbia is expected to benefit from an estimated one million additional out-of-province visitors and more than $1 billion in additional visitor spending.
