The Province is expanding a program that provides free home energy upgrades to lower-income households across B.C.

Working with BC Hydro, FortisBC, and the federal government, the Province is investing in an expanded Energy Conservation Assistance Program to help eligible homeowners and tenants reduce their utility bills.

“We are taking action to help people lower their utility bills by expanding our home energy-efficiency programming for lower-income families,” said Adrian Dix, B.C.’s Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions.

“Switching to high-efficiency heat pumps is one of the fastest, most effective ways to lower building-sector emissions and at the same time reduce costs for people.”

The program offers no-cost home energy assessments, energy coaching, and upgrades that can include electric heat pumps, dual-fuel heating systems, insulation, air sealing, and other weatherization improvements.

The expansion represents a combined investment of $222 million. Ottawa is contributing $93.8 million through the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, while the Province is providing $8 million. BC Hydro is investing $100.5 million, and FortisBC is contributing $20.1 million.

The funding is expected to help more than 7,600 income-qualified households improve their home's energy efficiency, lower monthly energy costs, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
