Drought Levels High In B.C.

Monday, December 12, 2022 at 7:39 AM

By Jay Herrington

Parts of B.C. continue to deal with some of the driest conditions on record.

Both east Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast continue to see water shortages as a lack of precipitation keeps reservoirs drained.

BC Hydro’s Stephen Watson says it’s a strange scene for this time of year, with reservoir levels for the Campbell River system, about five metres lower than they should be right now.

He says they’ve never seen anything like these levels in BC Hydro’s recorded history, going back some 55 years.

Watson says they’ll look into possibly reducing the Campbell River flows further this week, depending on the forecast, which is continuing to look cool and dry.

Environment Canada says we should be in the middle of one of the rainiest times of year, but cold air moving down from the Arctic is blocking rain in many areas.
