Mayors from around BC, including Campbell River’s Kermit Dahl, have launched a group to advocate for new jobs.
In a release from the newly formed Alliance of Resource Communities, Dahl said it’s encouraging that the federal and provincial governments are becoming more vocal in support of major projects.
But, he adds, thousands of people in Campbell River, who rely on natural resource industries, face an uncertain future.
Dahl was joined by 11 other mayors in issuing five calls-to-action, including co-ordinated government action in support of natural resource industries facing external economic threats, and faster approvals of responsible natural resource projects.
In addition, the group wants to see an increase in the momentum for First Nations economic participation in resource development, and stronger “can-do” advocacy from all levels of government in the development of natural resources in B.C.
Their final point was the active involvement of local government and First Nations from the beginning, and not as an afterthought.
