The Comox Valley Regional District announced yesterday a tentative collective agreement has been reached with United Steelworkers, Local 1-1937.
The union represents employees at the Comox Valley Sports and Aquatic Centres. Negotiations began in February on a new deal, with workers voting last month in favour of strike action should talks fail.
Further details about the tentative agreement will be available following the ratification process that will soon be underway.
“We are happy to have reached a tentative agreement with the United Steelworkers, Local 1-1937 that maintains fiscal responsibility for our residents while meeting the needs of the employees,” said Jake Martens, CVRD Acting Chief Administrative Officer.
"We are pleased with the results and feel that this agreement reflects the valued contributions of our employees, and we look forward to continuing to work with USW to provide accessible and inclusive recreation services to the region.”
Last week, the union had issued 72-hour strike notice, but the two sides managed to sit down before that Thursday deadline.
Jake Martens, CVRD Acting Chief Administrative Officer, says the deal maintains fiscal responsibility for residents while meeting the needs of the employees.
