Comox Valley Search and Rescue was called to the Blockhead Trail in Cumberland late Saturday morning after a mountain biker suffered a serious fall.
CVSAR crews responded alongside BC Emergency Health Services, providing on-scene assessment and treatment before carrying out a technical stretcher extrication to move the patient safely off the trail.
Weather and aircraft availability ruled out an air evacuation, so the patient was taken to hospital by ground ambulance, with critical-care support joining the crew en route.
In a post on Facebook, CVSAR says the call also showcased recent upgrades to their medical capabilities.
The team has launched an Advanced Medical Team made up of practicing paramedics and supported by emergency physicians, allowing for more advanced care and clinical decision-making directly in the field.
