Courtenay Mayor Bob Wells says the City is well positioned to meet new housing targets set out by the Province.
Last week, the BC Government added Courtenay to the fourth round of municipalities receiving Housing Target Orders, based on need and projected growth.
Wells says the city implemented sweeping changes to support the development of new housing in Courtenay, and they have a clear understanding of their role in addressing the ongoing housing crisis.
“Increasing access to all forms of housing will benefit residents, businesses and our community as a whole, both now and into the future,” he said.
Wells added they will also continue advocating for support from the provincial and federal governments for infrastructure funding needed to meet the housing targets, especially in south Courtenay.
Courtenay’s Housing Needs Report, released in 2024, sets a target of 2,472 new units by 2026.
As of the end of 2024, the City says it has already achieved 68 per cent of the target.
