The City of Courtenay is taking the next step in planning the future of Bill Moore and Dogwood parks after hearing from hundreds of residents.
Council reviewed a "What We Learned" report this week, summarizing the first phase of public engagement for the parks' strategic plan, and has directed staff to begin developing concept plans based on that feedback.
The engagement process took place in March and April and included a public survey, a pop-up event, workshops with sports user groups, and activities with students at Lake Trail Community School.
In all, the city received 472 contributions from residents and park users.
The report found strong support for improving both parks while preserving their natural character.
Residents identified safety, better lighting, and improved accessibility as priorities. Other common suggestions included upgraded sports fields, renewed playgrounds, improved washrooms and changing rooms, additional seating and gathering spaces, and more shade and shelter.
City staff will now use that feedback to create draft concept plans for Bill Moore and Dogwood parks.
Those concepts will be presented during a second round of public engagement, giving residents another opportunity to provide input before a final strategic plan is brought back to council for consideration.
