A free weekly community event aimed at getting people active is marking a major milestone this weekend.
Courtenay Airpark parkrun celebrates its first anniversary on Saturday, May 23rd, marking one year of bringing walkers, runners, and volunteers together every weekend in the Comox Valley.
The free 5-kilometre event takes place every Saturday morning at 9 at the Courtenay Airpark and is open to people of all ages and abilities.
Participants can walk, jog, run, or volunteer, with strollers and leashed dogs also welcome.
Since launching in May of last year, organizers say more than 550 people have taken part, supported by 76 volunteers.
Visitors from more than 80 locations across 13 countries have also participated, with some travelling specifically to experience what’s being called the world’s westernmost parkrun.
The parkrun movement began in the United Kingdom in 2004 and now includes more than 2,500 weekly events in 22 countries, including more than 60 across Canada.
Organizers say the event offers more than just physical activity, helping build social connections and creating an inclusive space for people who may not feel comfortable in more traditional athletic settings.
Participation is free, with registration available through Courtenay Airpark parkrun.
Once registered, participants can use their barcode at parkrun events around the world.
