A group of Comox Valley leaders is marking National Indigenous Peoples Day with a joint call to recognize Indigenous history, culture, and the ongoing work of reconciliation.
A statement from K’ómoks First Nation, the Comox Valley Regional District, and the municipalities of Comox, Courtenay, and Cumberland says the day is an opportunity to honour the strength, resilience, and diversity of Indigenous Peoples while building stronger relationships throughout the community.
The statement acknowledges that the Comox Valley is located on the unceded traditional territory of K’ómoks First Nation, and recognizes the rich heritage of the Sathloot, Sasitla, leeksen, Xa’xe, and Pentlatch peoples.
Local leaders say they look forward to gathering Saturday to learn from one another and to remember that Indigenous communities have cared for these lands for thousands of years.
The statement also highlights local governments' commitment to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and says, with the support and guidance of K’ómoks First Nation, they're working toward more meaningful engagement and reconciliation.
Residents are invited to take part in National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations Saturday from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Comox Valley Exhibition Grounds.
