Comox Fire Rescue is reminding residents to take precautions as the use of electric bikes and scooters continues to grow across the Comox Valley.
Fire officials say many of the devices rely on lithium-ion batteries, which store a large amount of energy in a compact space.
If a battery is damaged, improperly charged, or faulty, it can overheat in what’s known as thermal runaway - a chain reaction that can lead to fire or even explosion.
Comox Fire Rescue says a few simple steps can help reduce the risk.
Users are advised to always use the manufacturer-approved charger, avoid plugging multiple high-energy devices into the same outlet, and keep batteries away from combustible materials while charging.
Residents are also encouraged to regularly check for signs of swelling, overheating, or other damage.
If a battery is damaged, fire officials say it should not be repaired at home. Instead, it should be inspected or replaced by a qualified professional.
Comox Fire Rescue is also encouraging residents to ensure smoke alarms are working and to keep a fire extinguisher nearby when charging e-bike or scooter batteries.
Old or damaged lithium-ion batteries should never be stored inside the home. Residents are asked to recycle them at approved drop-off locations.
