The City of Courtenay will host a public ceremony later this month to mark the National Day of Mourning and honour workers killed, injured or made ill on the job.

The event is scheduled for Tuesday, April 28, from 10 to 10:30 a.m. at the Lewis Park outdoor stage. Workers, employers and community members are all invited to attend.

The ceremony will include remarks from local representatives, a wreath-laying and two minutes of silence.

Speakers are expected from WorkSafeBC, CUPE Local 556 and local government, with participation from K’ómoks First Nation anticipated.

City officials say flags at municipal facilities will be flown at half-mast in recognition of the day.

The City of Campbell River will also observe the National Day of Mourning on April 28 with a key ceremony at Frank James Park.

In 2025, 138 workers in British Columbia died as a result of workplace injury or disease. The city says each loss has lasting impacts on families, coworkers and communities.

The National Day of Mourning is observed annually across Canada to remember those affected by workplace incidents and to reaffirm a shared commitment to safe and healthy workplaces.
