The City of Courtenay is preparing to launch a new Intelligent Intersection Pilot at the intersection of Cliffe Avenue and 5th Street as part of ongoing efforts to modernize, improve safety and support movement throughout the downtown core.
It uses an artificial intelligence-based traffic analytics system.
Staff started implementing the new tech in January, to better understand intersection functions ahead of major intersection renewal projects, such as improvements at Cliffe Avenue and 5th Street.
The new platform continuously analyzes transportation activity at the intersection, allowing staff to better monitor vehicle queues, pedestrian movements, cyclist activity, transit operations and safety-related interactions throughout the day.
Mayor Bob Wells says the initiative gives staff an opportunity to better understand real-world traffic conditions before large projects begin.
He says it will improve how the intersection operates for all users today, while also positioning the City to advance future smart transportation initiatives.
Last fall, Council endorsed several safety and accessibility improvements for the intersection, including the removal of the northbound right-turn channel and the addition of a fourth pedestrian crossing leg.
The City notes, to protect privacy, the technology is fully compliant with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act requirements.
