A virtual info session tonight as community consultation continues for the City of Courtenay Flood Management Plan.

It’s developing steps to address flood risk and will help Courtenay reduce the impact of future flood events.

The session happens tonight from 730pm to 830pm, which will be posted to City of Courtenay afterwards.

An initial public survey in May gathered nearly 100 responses, with feedback and priorities for addressing flood risk in Courtenay.

Over 75% of survey participants said they were familiar with impacts from sea level rise and climate change and were most concerned about flood impacts to homes, properties and infrastructure.

They identified infrastructure and the environment as key areas of concern for the future, while sharing that it’s important to preserve and restore the environment, public access to the shoreline and rivers, and the health of the estuary.

The City is considering a broad range of strategies to adapt to flooding, which could include relocating buildings and critical infrastructure, upgrading existing infrastructure, or directing development to higher ground.
