The City of Campbell River and Wei Wai Kum First Nation have signed a new Municipal Service Agreement that formalizes how municipal services will be provided to Wei Wai Kum lands while strengthening the government-to-government relationship between the two communities.
The agreement replaces a number of older service arrangements with a single framework that outlines responsibilities for service delivery, financial commitments, infrastructure planning and future growth.
It also provides certainty for services including fire protection, water, sewer and future stormwater servicing, while recognizing the governance and decision-making authority of both governments.
Campbell River Mayor Kermit Dahl says the agreement provides a clear path forward for both governments by supporting long-term planning while respecting each other's independence and jurisdiction.
Wei Wai Kum Chief Chris Roberts says the agreement brings clarity and predictability as both communities continue to grow, and reflects the strong working relationship between the two governments.
The City and Wei Wai Kum say the agreement is an important milestone that builds on years of collaboration and supports future discussions aimed at strengthening communication, coordination and other areas of shared interest.
