The City of Courtenay and City of Campbell River are holding ceremonies to marking the National Day of Mourning on Tuesday.
The Courtenay event, honouring workers killed, injured or made ill on the job, goes from 10am to 10:30 a.m. at the Lewis Park outdoor stage.
The ceremony will include remarks from local representatives, a wreath-laying and two minutes of silence. Speakers are expected from WorkSafeBC, CUPE Local 556 and local government, with participation from K’ómoks First Nation anticipated.
Last year, 138 workers in British Columbia died as a result of workplace injury or disease. The City says each loss has lasting impacts on families, coworkers and communities.
The National Day of Mourning is observed annually across Canada to remember those affected by workplace incidents and to reaffirm a shared commitment to safe and healthy workplaces.
Flags at municipal facilities will be flown at half-mast in recognition of the day.
Flags are also flying at half-mast at City of Campbell River facilities today in recognition of the National Day of Mourning.
City staff and members of Council will take part in a small, employee-focused ceremony at No. 1 Fire Hall, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
The gathering provides a moment for reflection and a renewed commitment to creating a workplace where staff feel safe and supported.
The community is welcome to join the event.
